What is Telehealth? Telemental health? Online Therapy?

Writer: Dr. Jenny Schaafsma, PhDDr. Jenny Schaafsma, PhD

“Technology meets health!”

“It’s audio visual communication between two people.”

“It’s talking via phone or video on your computer/phone to your therapist.”

“It’s how you access health care from a distance.”

Exactly. Telehealth is the use of electronic technologies (phone, video, computer, laptop, email, etc.) to access health care remotely. For mental health, you may hear people refer to it as telemental health, telemental health therapy, telepsychology, online counseling or online therapy.

This is an adjustment for all. I want to encourage you to prioritize your mental health. Please make sure you’re engaging in self-care, adjusting your expectations, and extending flexibility, grace, and compassion to yourself during this time.

If you’re in need of additional support and live in Michigan,

please reach out via my website or call (616) 458-0692.

In response to COVID-19 insurances have expanded coverage to include telehealth services. During this time I am offering telemental health services by phone or video (which you can access via phone or computer) through a HIPAA compliant program for new and established clients.
